The Afterglow: Fruit of the Spirit: Fruit That God Enjoys
Pastor Allen opened the sermon by inviting everyone to turn to Matthew 13, John 15, and Galatians 5. He emphasized God’s sovereignty as the King of kings, reminding us that although we live under earthly authorities, the ultimate authority lies with God. He highlighted our need for His Holy Spirit to empower us as we delve into His Word.
Pastor Allen envisioned the peaceful beginnings in the Garden of Eden where Adam and Eve simply enjoyed God’s creation. He pointed out that after the fall, life transformed from enjoyment to toil. Yet, God desired for our lives to resemble a garden, filled with peace and fruitfulness. He noted that throughout the New Testament, the concept of ‘fruit’ appears consistently, symbolizing God’s intention for us to grow spiritually and bear fruit in our lives.
He shared the parable of the sower from Matthew 13, explaining the significance of different types of soil representing the hearts of those who hear God’s Word. Only the good soil yielded fruitful results, a call for each one of us to allow God’s Word to take root in our hearts. Pastor Allen urged that we should be careful not to let life’s distractions and trials choke out the Word, especially in our culture where many struggle to remain grounded.
In John 15, Pastor Allen discussed how Jesus described Himself as the true vine, emphasizing our role as branches that require pruning for greater fruitfulness. He presented the analogy of the vine-dresser lifting up unfruitful branches, portraying God’s loving care in guiding us toward growth. This pruning process, albeit sometimes painful, results in deeper spiritual fruitfulness, allowing us to become more like Christ.
As he transitioned to Galatians 5, Pastor Allen identified the fruit of the Spirit beginning with love, asserting that all other attributes stem from this core quality. He elaborated on how exhibiting love naturally leads to joy, peace, and patience, among other virtues. Each trait connected to love reflects our walk with Christ, molding us to represent Him effectively to the world. Pastor Allen concluded with a heartfelt prayer, calling on God to fill us with His Spirit so that we might be fruitful and glorify Him in all we do.
