Afterglow: My Cup Runs Over (Psalm 23:5)

Passage: Psalm 23:5
Service Type:

In Psalm 23:5, David declared, “My cup runs over,” expressing the abundant blessings and presence of God in his life. As believers, we must evaluate our own spiritual cups. Are they dry and empty, half full, or overflowing with God’s love, peace, purpose, and power? Jesus proclaimed in John 7:37-39 that those who come to Him will experience rivers of living water, referring to the Holy Spirit’s outpouring in the lives of those who believe. Many, however, do not thirst for Jesus because they have filled themselves with the things of the world, yet remain spiritually barren and unsatisfied.

We often drink from the wrong wells—seeking fulfillment in entertainment, materialism, human approval, sinful pleasures, empty religious practices, self-reliance, and the distractions of a busy life. Psalm 139:23-24 urges us to ask God to search our hearts and remove anything hindering us from being filled with His Spirit. Colossians 3:2 instructs us to set our minds on things above, rather than on earthly distractions. True satisfaction is found only in Christ, who calls us to drink deeply of His living water.

God invites us to thirst for more of Him. Psalm 63:1 describes David’s longing for God in a dry and thirsty land. Many today feel distant from God, yearning for His presence, peace, purpose, strength, and spiritual growth. Jesus calls those who are weary to come to Him for rest (Matthew 11:28). Those who hunger and thirst for righteousness will be filled (Matthew 5:6). The Holy Spirit empowers believers to live victoriously, as seen in Acts 1:8 and Ephesians 5:18, where we are commanded to be filled with the Spirit. The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead dwells within us (Romans 8:11), equipping us for God’s work.

As we prepare for the Holy Spirit’s work, we must yield our hearts, listen to His voice, and step out in faith. Psalm 51 reminds us of the importance of repentance and a pure heart before God. In times of quiet waiting upon the Lord, we create space for the Holy Spirit to move, bringing prophetic words, healing, and spiritual gifts. The gifts of revelation, utterance, and power—such as wisdom, knowledge, prophecy, tongues, faith, healing, and miracles—are available to those who seek the Lord earnestly.

As we enter this time of afterglow, let us open our hearts to God’s overflowing presence. Let us thirst for Him, seek His Spirit, and allow Him to fill us beyond measure. May our lives reflect His abundance, and may we be vessels through which His living water flows.
