When Victory Becomes Dangerous: The cost of Success (1 Samuel 18)

Preacher:
Passage: 1 Samuel 18
Service Type:

Pastor Allen expressed the immense goodness of God and how He serves as our way maker, fulfilling all our needs. He reminded us that despite our tendency to turn to other sources for help, we are called to come to God regularly, especially when we feel weary and burdened. In an outpouring of gratitude, Pastor Allen led the congregation in thanking the Lord for His presence among us as we worshiped. He emphasized the importance of inviting God to fill our lives and overflow with His blessings.

In recounting a recent weekend at church, Pastor Allen joyfully reflected on an overwhelming attendance, viewing it as a blessing and a testament to the many people yearning for God. He encouraged everyone to recognize their role as lights in the world and to share the goodness they have received from God. Transitioning into the Scripture, Pastor Allen welcomed the congregation to 1 Samuel chapter 18, where he looked forward to unfolding the stories of how God worked in the lives of His people.

As Pastor Allen delved into 1 Samuel 18, he highlighted the profound friendship between Jonathan and David. Their souls were knit together in deep love and mutual respect, which demonstrated the qualities of true friendship. Even through the lens of popular culture, he shared a quote emphasizing that great power comes with responsibility and the likelihood of greater challenges. Pastor Allen warned against the dangers of pride and jealousy, particularly in light of David’s growing popularity following his defeat of Goliath, which he had to navigate with wisdom and humility.

Pastor Allen drew attention to Saul’s reaction to David’s rising fame, emphasizing how jealousy and pride can poison relationships and hearts. He noted the contrast between Jonathan’s unselfishness and Saul’s murderous thoughts toward David. He expressed how jealousy could lead individuals away from God’s purpose, while humility and recognizing our roles can cultivate true friendships. Using Scripture from Colossians 3:17, he encouraged the congregation to do everything for God’s glory and to remember that our service should be directed towards Him rather than seeking personal recognition.

As the message continued, Pastor Allen reflected on David’s humility, particularly when offered Saul’s daughter as a wife. David’s response showcased his self-awareness and refusal to seek status. He reminded the congregation that true greatness in God’s kingdom comes from serving others selflessly. Highlighting the ongoing manipulation from Saul, Pastor Allen painted a picture of David’s trials not as setbacks but as opportunities designed by God for greater growth and reliance on the Lord. He connected the narrative to the overarching theme of trusting God amidst adversity, concluding with an encouragement to embody humility and to never underestimate God’s sovereignty in our lives.

This sermon was presented by Pastor Allen Victor at Calvary Chapel West Jacksonville.
