From Jerusalem to Antioch – Encouragement That Transforms- Guest Speaker: Trip Kimball
Trip Kimball shared insights from Acts chapter 4 about the vital ministry of encouragement. He encouraged everyone to think of those in their lives who have offered them encouragement. He mentioned how his wife exemplified this gift and how others, including friends, acted as motivators in his life. Encouragement, he indicated, can take many forms—sometimes gentle, other times more direct, and often involves being present for one another in difficult times.
Trip introduced Barnabas, a key figure in the early church known as the ‘son of encouragement.’ He highlighted how Barnabas didn’t choose this name for himself; rather, it was bestowed upon him by the apostles due to his natural inclination to uplift others. Through Barnabas’ actions, such as selling his land and dedicating the proceeds to the apostles, he demonstrated humility and a focus on helping others. This act was central to the establishment of community among believers.
As the sermon continued, Trip recounted the moment Saul, who later became Paul, arrived in Jerusalem after his miraculous conversion. The believers were afraid and doubted him, but Barnabas courageously stood up for Saul, recounting his genuine transformation. This act of encouragement was crucial in gaining Saul acceptance among the early Christians. This partnership reflects the importance of believing in potential when others might doubt.
The sermon expanded on how Barnabas was sent to Antioch to encourage new believers during a time of revival. Trip noted that Barnabas didn’t just stand on the sidelines; he actively sought Saul out to join him in ministry. This collaboration helped the church grow and fostered strong leadership. Trip also reflected on how Barnabas demonstrated trust in God’s plan, even when it involved risking his own reputation.
Towards the end, Trip urged everyone to embrace the role of being encouragers. He spoke about the simplicity of offering encouragement and how it can transform lives. He reminded the congregation that encouragement is a natural overflow of our relationship with Christ and called for everyone to look for opportunities to uplift others. Trip concluded by encouraging them to act on this calling, emphasizing that we can be instruments of God’s hope and love by simply encouraging those around us.
This sermon was presented by Trip Kimball at Calvary Chapel West Jacksonville.
