Stick with What God Said (1 Kings 13)
Pastor Allen Victor taught through 1 Kings 13 and examined the importance of knowing and obeying the Word of God. The message began with Jeroboam’s rebellion against the Lord as he established a false system of worship, built an altar, appointed unauthorized priests, and encouraged the worship of golden calves. Into that environment, God sent an unnamed man of God from Judah to Bethel with a prophetic message of judgment against the altar and the idolatry that surrounded it.
Pastor Allen explained how the man of God boldly proclaimed that a future descendant of David named Josiah would one day destroy the altar and judge the corrupt religious practices associated with it. This prophecy was remarkably specific and was accompanied by an immediate sign when the altar split apart and the ashes were poured out. The congregation was reminded that true prophecy was rooted in God’s Word and was often characterized by warnings, correction, and calls to repentance rather than vague promises and self-serving predictions.
The study highlighted Jeroboam’s response when he attempted to arrest the man of God, only to have his hand instantly wither. After the man of God prayed, the king’s hand was restored, demonstrating that God’s judgment was intended to bring repentance. Although Jeroboam briefly appeared humbled, his heart remained unchanged. Pastor Allen noted that not every open door represented God’s will. When the king invited the prophet to return with him for a reward, the man of God refused because God had already given him clear instructions to deliver the message and return home without eating, drinking, or retracing his steps.
The sermon then focused on the tragic turning point of the chapter. An older prophet sought out the man of God and invited him to return for a meal. Although the man of God initially refused, the older prophet falsely claimed that an angel had delivered a new message from the Lord. Believing the lie, the man of God abandoned the instructions God had clearly given him. Pastor Allen emphasized that believers must not accept every spiritual claim simply because it comes from someone who appears experienced, authoritative, or religious. Deception did not excuse disobedience, and the consequences were severe when the man of God chose another voice over the Word God had already spoken.
As the account unfolded, the Lord pronounced judgment through the very prophet who had deceived him. After leaving, the man of God was killed by a lion, demonstrating that obedience to God’s Word remained essential regardless of circumstances or competing voices. Even though the messenger died, the Word of God remained unchanged and the prophecy against Jeroboam’s altar would still come to pass.
Pastor Allen concluded by showing that Jeroboam never repented despite witnessing miracles, warnings, and judgment. Instead, he continued promoting false worship and appointing anyone who desired to become a priest. This persistent rebellion ultimately led to the destruction of his household. The chapter underscored the importance of knowing what God had spoken through Scripture and remaining faithful to it. The congregation was reminded that God primarily speaks through the reading and preaching of His Word, while also using godly counsel, the still small voice of His Spirit, burdens, dreams, visions, circumstances, peace, and words of knowledge. The central lesson was clear: when God has spoken clearly, every competing voice becomes a test. Believers were encouraged to obey God’s Word no matter what, remember that God does not change His mind simply because a new opportunity appears, recognize that past faithfulness does not guarantee present authority, and understand that the safest place to stand is where God last told them to stand.
