Reclaiming My Time (1 Kings 20)
Pastor Allen Victor presented a message from 1 Kings 20 that examined how the enemy sought to take what God had given His people and emphasized the importance of refusing to surrender without a fight. He showed how Ben-Hadad demanded Ahab’s silver, gold, wives, and children, and how Ahab’s willingness to compromise only encouraged greater demands. The message emphasized that what believers valued needed to be defended and that Christians needed to seek godly counsel rather than continual compromise.
Pastor Allen then examined how God gave Israel victory despite overwhelming odds. God used 232 young leaders and 7,000 Israelites against the much larger Syrian army, demonstrating that victory did not depend upon human numbers but upon God. The message encouraged believers to remember that they were never outnumbered when God was with them. It also emphasized that one victory did not mean the battle was over, but that believers needed to strengthen themselves and prepare for the next battle.
The sermon explained that the Syrians mistakenly believed Israel’s God was only the God of the hills, but God demonstrated that He was also God of the valleys. Pastor Allen connected this with spiritual warfare and encouraged believers to fight in the Spirit rather than in the flesh by putting on the whole armor of God, using the sword of the Spirit, and praying in the Spirit. The message reinforced the truth that believers could stand confidently because God was with them, even when they appeared greatly outnumbered.
The message also addressed Ahab’s failure to obey God completely. Although God had delivered Ben-Hadad into his hand, Ahab showed mercy to him and made a treaty with him. Pastor Allen used this account to emphasize personal responsibility, warning that not every failure should be attributed to spiritual warfare and that believers needed to accept responsibility for their own decisions and obedience.
In closing, Pastor Allen compared Ben-Hadad to Satan and focused on Jesus’ warning in John 10:10 that the thief came to kill, steal, and destroy. He explained that Satan sought to take life, steal what believers valued, and destroy families, marriages, children, and biblical truth. Particular attention was given to time, which was described as one of life’s most valuable possessions. The message warned that time could be stolen through social media, phones, entertainment, busyness, worry, procrastination, and meaningless distractions. Ephesians 5:15–16 was used to encourage believers to redeem their time because the days were evil. The sermon concluded with the contrast between Satan’s desire to kill, steal, and destroy and Jesus’ promise to give abundant life.
This sermon was presented at Calvary Chapel West Jacksonville under the leadership of Pastor Allen Victor.
