10 Reasons to Praise the Lord (2 Samuel 22)

Preacher:
Passage: 2 Samuel 22
Service Type:

Pastor Allen Victor began this message by asking a simple but searching question: when was the last time we truly gave God a shout of praise from the depths of our hearts? He explained that worship can easily become routine, but genuine praise flows from gratitude for what God has done. Looking at David’s song of deliverance in 2 Samuel 22:1–4, Pastor Allen showed how David celebrated the Lord as his rock, fortress, deliverer, strength, shield, and Savior after being rescued from his enemies and from Saul.

Pastor Allen explained that David praised God first because the Lord was everything he needed. When the waves of death surrounded him and the sorrows of Sheol confronted him (2 Samuel 22:5–6), David understood that only God could truly save. Human resources such as doctors, weapons, or military strength may help, but ultimate deliverance always comes from the Lord.

He then emphasized that God hears the cries of His people. David declared that in his distress he called upon the Lord and God heard his voice from His temple (2 Samuel 22:7). Pastor illustrated that just as parents recognize the cry of their child, God knows and hears the cry of His children. Believers can call upon the Lord at any moment and know that He listens.

Pastor Allen continued by explaining that God not only hears but also comes to the rescue. The dramatic imagery in 2 Samuel 22:7–19 described the Lord moving in power to deliver David from enemies that were too strong for him. Pastor compared this to the fierce protection of a parent defending their child, showing that God’s righteous anger is motivated by His love and protection for His people.

Another reason to praise God, Pastor taught, is that He rewards righteousness. David testified that the Lord rewarded him according to his righteousness and faithfulness (2 Samuel 22:20–25). Believers were reminded to continue doing right even when wronged, following the instructions of Ephesians 4:26, Romans 12:17, and Romans 12:19, and trusting God rather than seeking revenge.

Pastor also highlighted God’s mercy. David wrote that the Lord shows mercy to the merciful and saves the humble (2 Samuel 22:26–28). Pastor explained that when believers extend mercy to others, they position themselves to receive mercy from God when they need it most.

The message continued with the reminder that God gives supernatural ability and strength to His people. David declared that through God he could run against a troop and leap over a wall (2 Samuel 22:29–31). Pastor emphasized that God empowers believers through the Holy Spirit to face challenges that would otherwise be impossible.

Pastor Allen further explained that God equips His people for life. In 2 Samuel 22:32–37, David testified that God strengthened him, guided his steps, and trained his hands for battle. Pastor encouraged believers to pursue their “higher education” with God, learning wisdom, discernment, and direction from Him.

He also reminded the congregation that God gives victory over enemies. David declared that the Lord strengthened him for battle and subdued those who rose against him (2 Samuel 22:38–43). Pastor explained that through Christ believers already have victory over enemies such as sin, Satan, death, and hell.

Pastor concluded by showing that God gives believers authority over things that once ruled them (2 Samuel 22:44–47) and that ultimately the battle belongs to the Lord (2 Samuel 22:48–51). Because God fights for His people, they can live with confidence and gratitude, praising Him for every victory.
