Christmas: God’s Perfect Timing (Galatians 4:4-5)
Have you ever felt like life was spiraling out of control, with everything happening at the worst possible time? Maybe it’s the loss of a job, the passing of a loved one, or financial struggles that seem to hit hardest during the holiday season. In those moments, it’s easy to feel like the timing couldn’t be worse. But what if those seemingly inconvenient times were actually God’s perfect setup for something greater?
In the sermon “Christmas: God’s Perfect Timing,” we explored how the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem was not a random event, but a moment meticulously planned by God. Drawing from Galatians 4:4-5, we learned that “when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son.” Just as Mary and Joseph likely felt that the census and their arduous journey to Bethlehem couldn’t have come at a worse time, God’s plan was unfolding exactly as He intended. Luke 2:1-7 recounts how Mary, heavily pregnant, traveled with Joseph to Bethlehem under the decree of Caesar Augustus. It wasn’t the timing they wanted or expected, but it was the perfect time in God’s divine plan.
Timing plays a significant role in every aspect of life. Whether catching a flight, cooking a meal, or even the arrival of a newborn, the right timing makes all the difference. The sermon highlighted that while we might not always understand God’s timing, He is never late. From the prophecy in Genesis 3:15, where God promised a Savior, to the fulfillment of that promise in the New Testament, we see that God always acts at the precise moment He intends. Jesus’ birth demonstrated God’s divine timing, His unwavering love, and His commitment to fulfilling His promises.
God’s plan was not just about the “when,” but also the “how.” Jesus was born under the law, fulfilling its requirements to redeem those under it. His birth demonstrated His divine nature as the Son of God, yet He was born of a woman to fully identify with humanity. Jesus experienced life’s hardships—poverty, betrayal, suffering, and even death—so He could truly relate to us. Through His sinless life, He became the perfect sacrifice, paying the debt of sin we could never repay.
As Galatians 4:5 explains, Jesus came to redeem us and give us the gift of adoption into God’s family. Adoption is an act of love—choosing someone and making them your own. In the same way, God chooses us, loves us, and invites us to be part of His eternal family. Just as the birth of Jesus was perfectly timed to accomplish God’s purpose, He orchestrates the events in our lives to draw us closer to Him.
This Christmas, reflect on how God’s perfect timing is at work in your life. The challenges you face might feel overwhelming, but they could be the very moments God is using to bring about His greater plan. Like Mary and Joseph in Bethlehem, trust that God’s timing is always right, His plans are always good, and His love for you is unwavering.
