Easter: He Is Risen (Luke 24:1-12)
Pastor Allen opened the sermon by inviting the congregation to turn to Luke chapter 24 and emphasized God’s creation of the world, playfully lightening the mood with humorous comments. He expressed gratitude for salvation and the hope instilled in believers because of Christ’s resurrection, leading into a heartfelt prayer.
He introduced Jesus as the “undisputed King of Kings,” recounting how Jesus’ resurrection confirmed His authority over death, sin, and the devil. Pastor Allen highlighted the significance of Jesus’ victory, drawing a contrast between the despair felt during the crucifixion and the joy of resurrection Sunday. He set the stage to delve deep into the narrative of the resurrection in Luke 24, emphasizing how the tomb was empty when the women arrived.
The sermon transitioned into the description of the women visiting the tomb early on the first day of the week. Pastor Allen pointed out how the stone was rolled away, not to let Jesus out, but to let the women in to witness the miracle. He addressed common objections to the resurrection, arguing that the empty tomb is one of the greatest evidences of Jesus’ resurrection and provided insightful commentary on the various theories that attempted to explain away the resurrection.
Pastor Allen elaborated on the foundation of Christian faith being the resurrection, quoting 1 Corinthians 15. He stressed that without the resurrection, preaching and faith would be in vain. He urged everyone to examine the evidence for themselves, including the courage of the apostles and the eyewitness accounts of Christ’s resurrection, affirming that many were willing to die for the truth of their beliefs.
As the women encountered angels at the tomb, Pastor Allen highlighted their message: “Why do you seek the living among the dead?” He emphasized the need to remember Jesus’ words about His death and resurrection and how easy it is to forget the promises of God in troubled times.
The message continued with the assertion that the resurrection invites every believer to examine these claims personally. Peter ran to the tomb, eager to see for himself, symbolizing the importance of individual faith and discovery. Pastor Allen encouraged everyone to not rely solely on the faith of others but to build their own relationship with Christ.
In closing, Pastor Allen issued a heartfelt invitation to accept Jesus as Lord and Savior, leading a sinner’s prayer. He reassured those who prayed that they were born again and became children of God, encouraging them to pursue their new faith actively. The service concluded with an encouragement to meditate on the message of hope from the resurrection, promising that believers would someday be with the Lord.
This sermon was presented by Pastor Allen Victor at Calvary Chapel West Jacksonville.
