JESUS IS THE SON OF GOD (Hebrews 1:1-4)
In the book of Hebrews, we learn of God’s communication with humanity throughout history, expressed in various ways such as through stars, nature, conscience, signs and wonders, priests, and prophets. However, in these last days, God has spoken to us directly through His Son, Jesus Christ, who holds the title of heir of all things and is the agent of creation. The term “Son of God” emphasizes Jesus’ divine nature, distinct from any created being. Despite attempts to diminish His divinity, Jesus unequivocally claimed equality with God, a claim for which the Pharisees sought to kill Him.
Jesus, as the creator of the universe, is affirmed both in the Old and New Testaments. The use of the word “Us” in Genesis is often misinterpreted as angels, but scriptural context emphasizes God’s solitary role in creation. The New Testament reaffirms this, stating that all things were created through Jesus and for Him. Furthermore, Jesus is described as the “brightness of His glory” and the “express image of His person,” representing the Father in His entirety. He is not merely a reflection but the full embodiment of God’s glory, allowing humanity to perceive God without being overwhelmed.
Moreover, Jesus sustains the universe by the power of His word, holding all things together. Scientists acknowledge forces such as the strong nuclear force and proteins, yet the ultimate sustainer is Jesus Himself. He is the cure for sin, having purged humanity’s sins by His sacrificial death, a redemption achieved solely by Him. This act parallels the anti-venom produced from a snakebite, where Jesus took on sin to provide the remedy for it. Additionally, Jesus occupies a position of supreme authority, seated at the right hand of the Majesty on high, signifying His kingship over all creation.
The message in this sermon reminds us of Jesus’ exalted status, surpassing even the angels, as He inherits a name superior to theirs. His name is above all names, and every knee will bow, and tongue confess that He is Lord. This title, “King of Kings and Lord of Lords,” signifies His sovereignty over all realms. Pastor Allen implores listeners not to ignore Jesus, who came to rescue humanity from judgment. Through Him, salvation and reconciliation with God are offered to all who believe.
