Pray in the Spirit: Praying the Word of God (Afterglow)

Preacher:
Series:
Passage: Ephesians 6:10-18
Service Type:

The sermon titled “Pray in the Spirit: Praying the Word of God” centered on the significance of prayer in spiritual warfare and the power of praying through Scripture. Drawing from Ephesians 6:10-18, it emphasized the necessity for believers to equip themselves with the full armor of God to withstand the enemy’s attacks. This passage vividly described the spiritual battle we face, not against flesh and blood but against spiritual forces of darkness. The battles for lost souls, families, marriages, children, and even nations like Israel were highlighted as critical fronts in this ongoing spiritual war.

In order to fight these battles, Christians are instructed to take up specific spiritual weapons: the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. However, it’s not enough to simply put on this armor—prayer plays a crucial role. In Ephesians 6:18, Paul instructed believers to “pray always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit.” This, he explained, involves a continuous, Spirit-empowered, Spirit-prompted, and Spirit-led mode of praying, where the Holy Spirit guides the believer’s heart and thoughts toward God’s purposes.

Paul’s teaching on the Spirit-led life was further reinforced with references to Galatians 3:3, where believers are warned not to revert to their fleshly efforts after beginning their journey in the Spirit. The sermon also drew on Zechariah 4:6, reminding the congregation that the battles we face cannot be won by human strength or power, but by God’s Spirit.

The heart of the message focused on the importance of praying the Word of God. This was demonstrated through several scriptural examples, including Nehemiah praying Deuteronomy 26, Moses praying Exodus 32:13, and Daniel in Daniel 9:4-19. These examples illustrated how Scripture can be used to remind God of His promises, and how praying through the Word ensures that our prayers align with God’s will. As stated in Numbers 23:19, God does not lie; He fulfills every promise He has spoken. Psalm 138:2 reminded us that God values His Word so highly that He holds it above His own name, making it the foundation for powerful and effective prayers.

Praying the Word offers numerous benefits, such as keeping the mind focused, preventing repetition, expanding the scope of our prayers, and ensuring that our prayers are in line with God’s heart. By praying through Scripture, believers engage more deeply with the Word and discover that their prayers are guided by the very promises of God. The sermon encouraged the congregation to let God’s Word guide their prayers, following the example set by Jesus and other biblical figures.

A key point in the sermon was the differentiation between praying in tongues, which is praying in the Spirit without understanding (as Paul described in 1 Corinthians 14:14-15), and praying the Scriptures, which is Spirit-led praying with understanding. Both forms of prayer are empowered by the Holy Spirit, and both are powerful when directed by God’s will. Praying in the Spirit is not always speaking in tongues; it can also be Spirit-prompted prayer, where believers pray with a burden placed on their hearts, or Spirit-led prayer, where they allow the Scriptures to direct their petitions and praises to God.

The sermon closed with practical examples of how to pray the Scriptures, using Psalm 23 and other passages as models for personal prayer. By praying through passages like Psalm 23:1-6, believers can declare God as their Shepherd and express their trust in His provision, guidance, and protection. These prayers, grounded in Scripture, bring a deep sense of peace and assurance that God’s promises will come to pass.

As Pastor Allen Victor of Calvary Chapel West Jacksonville concluded, praying the Word of God is a transformative practice that not only deepens our connection with God but also strengthens our faith and equips us to stand firm in the face of spiritual warfare. Through prayer, we align our hearts with God’s purposes and experience the power of His Spirit working in and through us.
