The Afterglow: The promise of the Holy Spirit

The sermon, “The Promise of the Holy Spirit,” explored the biblical foundation, fulfillment, and transformative work of the Holy Spirit throughout the Scriptures. Beginning with the Old Testament, God’s promise to pour out His Spirit was revealed in passages such as Joel 2:28-29, Isaiah 44:3, and Ezekiel 36:26-27. These texts highlighted the promise of prophecy, visions, and spiritual renewal for all people, emphasizing God’s intention to create a covenant community guided by His Spirit. The imagery of a new heart and the outpouring of blessings upon descendants provided hope for a deeper, personal relationship with the divine.

In the New Testament, this promise was affirmed and clarified. John the Baptist testified to the coming Messiah who would baptize not only with water but with the Holy Spirit and fire (John 1:33; Luke 3:16). Jesus Himself confirmed the Father’s promise, instructing His disciples to wait in Jerusalem for the Spirit’s arrival (Acts 1:4-5). This pivotal moment came on the Day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit descended with power, marked by the sound of rushing wind and tongues of fire. As recorded in Acts 2:1-4, this event empowered believers from various parts of the world, to hear what was spoken in their own languages, inaugurating the church’s mission to spread the gospel with boldness and unity.

The sermon delved into the different aspects of baptism, highlighting water baptism as an identification with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. It is an outward expression of an inward transformation, symbolizing the believer’s commitment to walking in newness of life (Romans 6:3-4; Colossians 2:12-13). Additionally, the baptism of the Holy Spirit was presented as an act of empowerment, equipping believers with supernatural abilities to fulfill their mission as Christ’s witnesses (Acts 1:8). The dynamic power of the Spirit was shown to bring gifts for the benefit of the church, emphasizing that they are to glorify Jesus rather than self (1 Corinthians 13).

The baptism of fire, symbolizing purification and judgment, was explored through passages such as John 16:7-11 and Isaiah 4:3-4. The purifying work of the Holy Spirit was shown to bring conviction of sin, righteousness, and judgment. This cleansing is essential for personal sanctification and the corporate holiness of the church. Historical examples, like the account of Ananias and Sapphira in Acts 5:1-16, illustrated the Spirit’s role in fostering a reverent, pure church that leads to revival and a powerful witness.

Through these biblical truths, the sermon called believers to continually seek the filling of the Holy Spirit, recognizing that this is an ongoing command (Ephesians 5:18). It emphasized the necessity of living in reliance on the Spirit’s power to experience transformation and fulfill God’s mission effectively.

This message was shared at Calvary Chapel West Jacksonville, where Pastor Allen Victor leads the congregation in exploring God’s Word verse by verse.
