The Devil’s Strategy & God’s Victory: The Key to Overcome Satan’s Attacks (1 Peter 5)

Preacher:
Passage: 1 Peter 5
Service Type:

This sermon explored the profound lessons in 1 Peter 5, addressing how Christians can triumph over Satan’s attacks by embracing humility, faith, and reliance on God’s grace. Pastor Allen Victor began with an engaging introduction, sharing lighthearted anecdotes and then delving into the context of Peter’s epistle. Chapters 1-4 of 1 Peter encouraged believers enduring persecution, while Chapter 5 offered specific guidance for leaders and the flock on navigating spiritual struggles.

The sermon highlighted the role of spiritual leaders as shepherds of God’s flock. Peter, writing as a “fellow elder,” modeled humility, reminding leaders of the suffering and glory of Christ. Elders were exhorted to lead willingly, not under compulsion, and to serve eagerly rather than for selfish gain. A good shepherd, like a pastor, tends to the needs of the flock, offering guidance, protection, and care. Pastor Allen painted a vivid picture of shepherding, emphasizing the patience, dedication, and humility required, as seen in the lives of biblical figures such as David, Moses, and Jesus, the “Good Shepherd” (John 10:11).

The practical aspects of shepherding mirrored the needs of the congregation. Sheep require protection, guidance, shearing, and nurturing—just as believers depend on spiritual leaders to teach truth, restore order, and address emotional and spiritual burdens. Shepherds were also called to lead by example, echoing Christ’s humility in washing His disciples’ feet and sharing their struggles. Leaders who fulfill their roles faithfully will one day receive a “crown of glory” from the Chief Shepherd, Jesus Christ.

The message shifted to the congregation, urging believers to submit to their elders and be clothed with humility. Pastor Allen underscored the societal drift from respect and humility toward self-centeredness, marked by entitlement and a lack of discipline. Peter’s admonition to humble oneself under God’s mighty hand was explored, emphasizing that humility, though unnatural, leads to God’s grace and eventual exaltation.

Pastor Allen used vivid illustrations, including cultural anecdotes and real-world statistics, to emphasize the pitfalls of pride and the benefits of humility. He reminded listeners that pride often leads to chaos and conflict, while humility invites God’s grace and peace. Citing Augustine, he reflected on how humility transforms individuals into vessels of grace, contrasting pride’s destructive nature.

The sermon closed with a focus on spiritual warfare, as Peter described the devil as a prowling lion seeking to devour. Pastor Allen explained how Satan’s primary weapon is deception, likening him to a toothless lion whose roar instills fear and doubt. Believers were encouraged to resist him by standing steadfast in faith, refusing to succumb to lies about their suffering or God’s care.

Pastor Allen emphasized that God allows trials to refine and strengthen His people, transforming what the enemy meant for harm into something good. The “God of all grace” perfects, establishes, strengthens, and settles His followers through their challenges. The message concluded with a reminder of the ultimate victory believers have in Christ, who grants both saving and sustaining grace.

Through Peter’s words, this sermon provided timeless encouragement to both leaders and congregants. Leaders are called to shepherd with humility and diligence, while believers are urged to resist pride and Satan’s schemes, trusting fully in God’s grace and provision.

This message was shared by Pastor Allen Victor at Calvary Chapel West Jacksonville, where the mission is to faithfully teach God’s Word and guide the flock.
