Ancient Friendship & Sudden Enemy (1 Kings 5)

Preacher:
Passage: 1 Kings 5
Service Type:

In this message titled Ancient Friendship & Sudden Enemy (1 Kings 5), Pastor Allen Victor taught through 1 Kings 5:1–18, asking the probing question of how a friendship could turn into hostility. Allen reflected on how Hiram, king of Tyre in Lebanon, had once loved David and formed a peaceful alliance with Israel, yet today that region often stood in opposition. He used this contrast to challenge listeners to consider what causes relationships to break down and how spiritual drift can lead to division.

Allen explained that David had been a man of war and therefore was not permitted to build the temple (1 Kings 5:3), but Solomon had entered a season of peace (1 Kings 5:4). From this, he emphasized the importance of recognizing times and seasons in life—there was a time to fight and a time to build. He shared personal reflections on seasons of ministry, reminding the church never to sacrifice family while pursuing ministry or success. Drawing from 1 Chronicles 22, he showed how David faithfully prepared Solomon for the task, proving that even if one was not called to build, they still had a vital role in preparing others.

Continuing through 1 Kings 5:5–12, Allen highlighted Solomon’s humility in seeking help from Hiram, noting that wisdom was shown in admitting limitations. He warned against pride and self-reliance, encouraging believers to be willing both to give and to receive help. He reminded the church that everyone has a part to play in God’s kingdom—whether as a worker or supporter—and those small contributions, when combined, created great impact.

In 1 Kings 5:13–16, Allen pointed out Solomon’s wisdom in balancing work and family, ensuring the laborers spent more time at home than at work. He contrasted this with modern life, where many reversed that priority, and urged believers to guard their families carefully.

As he taught from 1 Kings 5:17–18, Allen focused on the temple’s foundation being made of large, costly, and carefully hewn stones. He explained that strong foundations required time, sacrifice, and quality. Applying this to marriage, parenting, spiritual life, and the church, he warned that many structures appeared impressive outwardly but were weak because of neglected foundations. He anchored this truth in 1 Corinthians 3:11 and Matthew 7:24–27, emphasizing that Jesus Christ was the only true foundation and that obedience to His Word was essential for stability.

Allen concluded by briefly tracing the historical shift between Israel and Lebanon, noting how a once peaceful alliance had devolved into conflict over centuries due to repeated rejection and hardened hearts. He used this as a sobering reminder that relationships—both with God and others—must be guarded, nurtured, and built on truth.

This message was shared at Calvary Chapel West Jacksonville, under the leadership of Pastor Allen Victor.
