Glimpsing the Glory, Walking the Valley (Matthew 17:1-27)
Hoover Davis taught through Matthew 17 and showed how the disciples experienced Christ’s glory on the Mount of Transfiguration before returning to the realities of ministry in the valley. Hoover explained that Jesus did not become someone different on the mountain, but revealed the glory He had always possessed as the eternal Son of God. He emphasized that Peter, James, and John witnessed the fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets in Christ alone and learned that their focus belonged solely on Jesus rather than preserving spiritual experiences. The message demonstrated that mountaintop moments strengthened believers for faithful service, but God ultimately called them back into a world filled with brokenness, spiritual battles, and opportunities to trust Him.
The sermon also examined Jesus’ healing of the demon-possessed boy, teaching that victory came through genuine faith in a great God rather than through great faith in itself. Hoover reminded believers that even faith as small as a mustard seed accomplished God’s purposes when it rested in Christ. He highlighted the importance of prayer and fasting as biblical disciplines that deepened dependence upon the Lord rather than earning His power. The message concluded with Jesus’ payment of the temple tax, illustrating His humility, His divine provision, and His willingness to lay aside His rights to remove obstacles to the gospel. Believers were encouraged to trust Jesus in moments of glory, hardship, and daily responsibilities, knowing He remained the King of Glory, the Healer of the broken, and the faithful Provider. The message ended with a clear invitation to place saving faith in Jesus Christ. This message was shared at Calvary Chapel West Jacksonville, under the leadership of Pastor Allen Victor.
