The Spoken Gifts of the Holy Spirit (Afterglow)

Preacher:
Series:
Passage: 1 Corinthians 12
Service Type:

Pastor Allen Victor continued the Afterglow series by examining the “spoken gifts” of the Holy Spirit—prophecy, tongues, and the interpretation of tongues—and explained how God intended these gifts to function biblically within the church. Beginning with 1 Corinthians 12:1, he reminded the congregation that believers should not remain ignorant concerning spiritual gifts and identified misinformation, abuse, false teaching, doubt, and tradition as common sources of confusion. Pastor Allen emphasized that Scripture, not personal experience, remained the final authority for understanding and practicing the gifts of the Spirit.

Pastor Allen distinguished between the office of a prophet and the gift of prophecy, explaining that prophecy primarily served to build up, stir up, and comfort God’s people according to 1 Corinthians 14:3. He also identified biblical characteristics of false prophets and demonstrated from 1 Corinthians 14:29-33 that prophetic ministry should always operate in an orderly, accountable, and peaceful manner.

The message then explored the gift of tongues as a Spirit-enabled language directed toward God in prayer, worship, blessing, and thanksgiving. Using 1 Corinthians 14, Pastor Allen showed that tongues provided personal edification, should be desired without manipulation or abuse, and served as a sign for unbelievers when exercised according to God’s design. He contrasted the biblical gift with common misconceptions and emphasized that believers should never create confusion through improper use.

The sermon concluded by explaining the essential role of the interpretation of tongues, which allowed the entire church to be edified rather than only the individual speaking. Drawing from 1 Corinthians 14:26-33 and Acts 2:1-14, Pastor Allen demonstrated that interpretation communicated the meaning of Spirit-led worship rather than providing a word-for-word translation. He reminded the church that every spiritual gift should operate decently, in order, and for the benefit of the whole body of Christ.

Returning to 1 Corinthians 12:11 and the theme of love in chapter 13, Pastor Allen challenged those who doubted the gifts, those who had abused them, and those who desired them to respond with repentance, faith, worship, and dependence upon the Holy Spirit. The service concluded with an invitation to seek the Lord for a fresh filling of the Holy Spirit, boldness, wisdom, and the biblical operation of the spoken gifts.

This message was shared at Calvary Chapel West Jacksonville, under the leadership of Pastor Allen Victor.
