Marriage, Divorce and the Grace of God (Matthew 19:8) (Part 3)

Preacher:
Passage: Matthew 19:8
Service Type:

Pastor Allen Victor continued the series on Marriage, Divorce and the Grace of God by teaching from Matthew 19:8 and showing that God’s original design for marriage was one man and one woman united for life. He explained that Moses permitted divorce because of the hardness of people’s hearts, emphasizing that many marriages fail when one or both spouses run out of grace. Pastor Allen carefully defined biblical grace as God’s unearned and undeserved favor, reminding believers that the longer a marriage lasts, the more grace is needed to overlook imperfections, extend forgiveness, and demonstrate Christlike love. Through Scripture and practical illustrations, he encouraged Christians to recognize symptoms of a “grace deficit” and to continually rely upon God’s grace rather than their own strength.

Pastor Allen demonstrated that every person desperately needed God’s grace, regardless of how righteous they appeared. He showed that Noah, Abraham, David, Paul, and the nation of Israel all depended upon God’s mercy instead of their own goodness. Quoting both Scripture and respected Christian authors, he emphasized that salvation could never be earned but was freely given through Jesus Christ, who received the punishment sinners deserved so they could receive the blessings they did not deserve. He reminded the church that no one was beyond the reach of God’s grace and no one ever outgrew the need for it.

The message concluded with the powerful account of Hosea and Gomer, illustrating God’s relentless love for His unfaithful people. Pastor Allen explained how Hosea pursued, redeemed, and restored his adulterous wife instead of abandoning her, revealing a beautiful picture of God’s grace toward Israel and toward every believer. He encouraged the church to extend both mercy and grace in their relationships, remembering that love covers a multitude of sins and that God’s grace is able to forgive, restore, and redeem every repentant heart.
