Elder Donavan Mills presented a message from 2 Kings 1 titled “Where Do We Turn When Trouble Comes?” He examined the life of King Ahaziah and showed how trouble revealed where he placed his trust. After Ahaziah was injured in a fall, he sought an answer from Baal-Zebub rather than turning to the God of Israel. Through Elijah, God confronted Ahaziah’s misplaced trust and reminded him that He was available to be sought. Donavan emphasized that where people turned when they were afraid revealed what they trusted.

The message also examined how a believer’s identity and direction should be recognizable to others. Ahaziah immediately recognized Elijah by the description of his appearance and clothing, but the deeper application was that a life devoted to God should have a recognizable direction. Donavan challenged listeners to consider whether someone watching their lives would recognize Christ in them.

The account of the three captains demonstrated the contrast between pride and humility. The first two captains approached Elijah with demands from the king, while the third captain fell on his knees, pleaded for mercy, and approached with humility. Donavan emphasized that human authority could not override God’s authority and that pride demanded while humility submitted. He further explained that biblical faith did not tell God what He must do, but trusted God with the outcome. The example of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego illustrated faith that trusted God whether He delivered them from the furnace or not.

Donavan then emphasized that God’s Word did not change according to a person’s feelings, position, or circumstances. Ahaziah disliked the message he received, but his rejection of it did not make God’s Word false. His death ultimately occurred according to the word of the LORD that Elijah had spoken, demonstrating that God’s Word would come to pass. The message challenged believers to obey God’s Word even when it corrected something they wanted and to choose humility rather than resistance when confronted by truth.

The sermon concluded by emphasizing that Ahaziah’s greatest problem was not simply that he experienced a difficult circumstance, but where he turned when that circumstance came. Donavan encouraged believers to run to God rather than away from Him, trust God’s will rather than demand their own and build their faith not merely on what God could do but on who God was. The message also challenged listeners to consider what their lives would ultimately be remembered for—not possessions, position, or accomplishments, but whether they trusted God, obeyed His Word, and pointed others toward the Lord.
