What Is Your Worship Worth (Matthew 26:1-16)
In this sermon, “What Is Your Worship Worth,” Pastor Allen Victor taught from Matthew 26:1–16 and challenged believers to examine the value they placed on Jesus through their worship. He explained that there were two types of worshippers: takers, who followed Jesus for what they could receive, and givers, who worshipped Him regardless of what they gained.
As Jesus prepared His disciples for His coming crucifixion during Passover, the religious leaders plotted to kill Him, demonstrating that human opposition could not prevent God from accomplishing His plans. While Jesus was at the house of Simon the leper in Bethany, an unnamed woman poured very costly fragrant oil on His head. Although some of the disciples complained that the oil could have been sold and the money given to the poor, Jesus defended her actions and described them as a good work. Her offering demonstrated both her worship of Jesus and her preparation for His burial.
Pastor Allen explained that worship involved ascribing worth to God, while praise expressed gratitude for what He had done. He emphasized that the value we placed on something influenced what we were willing to sacrifice for it. The woman’s costly offering revealed her love and devotion to Jesus, while Judas Iscariot’s willingness to betray Jesus for thirty pieces of silver revealed a heart motivated by greed. The contrast challenged believers to consider whether they followed Jesus for personal benefits or because He was worthy of their worship.
The sermon emphasized that Jesus deserved worship regardless of whether He provided happiness, health, wealth, answered prayers, or solutions to life’s difficulties. Pastor Allen encouraged believers to follow the example of Mary, whose worship came from the heart, was costly, unhindered, unashamed, focused, Christ-centered, impactful, and accompanied by revelation. Her devotion was not stopped by the opinions of others, and her actions became a lasting memorial of her love for Christ.
Pastor Allen concluded by encouraging believers to remove distractions, focus their hearts on Jesus, and worship Him with genuine devotion. He reminded the congregation that worship could deepen their understanding of God’s character, revealing His glory, mercy, wisdom, presence, peace, greatness, holiness, and majesty. The central challenge was to consider what Jesus was truly worth to us and whether our worship reflected His supreme worth.
This message was presented at Calvary Chapel West Jacksonville, under the leadership of Pastor Allen Victor.
