Binding the Strongman (Matthew 12:22-50)

Preacher:
Passage: Matthew 12:22-50
Service Type:

Pastor Allen Victor taught through Matthew 12:22–50 in a message titled Binding the Strongman, explaining how Jesus demonstrated His authority over both physical and spiritual realms. He began by recalling how Jesus was accused of violating the Sabbath earlier in the chapter yet revealed Himself as Lord of the Sabbath. Allen then focused on Matthew 12:22–24, where a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute was brought to Jesus and instantly healed as the demon was cast out. While the multitudes wondered if Jesus was the Son of David, the Pharisees hardened their hearts and accused Him of working by the power of Beelzebub.

Teaching from Matthew 12:25–30, Allen explained that Jesus exposed the foolishness of their claim, declaring that a kingdom divided against itself cannot stand. He illustrated how this principle applies not only spiritually, but also to nations, churches, and individuals. Jesus revealed that His power came from the Spirit of God, proving that the kingdom of God had come among them. Allen emphasized that in order to plunder a strong man’s house, the strong man must first be bound—showing that Jesus has both the power and authority to overcome Satan. He also noted that Jesus’ ability to know their thoughts pointed to His divine nature, as only God truly knows the hearts of men (1 Corinthians 2:16).

Moving into Matthew 12:31–37, Allen addressed the seriousness of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, explaining that while every sin and blasphemy can be forgiven, rejecting the clear revelation of the Holy Spirit concerning Jesus leaves no room for repentance. He contrasted general knowledge about Christ with direct revelation from the Spirit, warning that continual rejection of that truth results in spiritual hardness. He further taught that our words reveal the condition of our hearts and will ultimately justify or condemn us.

From Matthew 12:38–42, Allen showed how the Pharisees demanded a sign despite witnessing countless miracles. Jesus rebuked them, pointing instead to the sign of Jonah—His coming death and resurrection. Allen challenged believers not to become “miracle chasers,” but to walk by faith (2 Corinthians 5:7), trusting that the resurrection alone is sufficient proof of who Jesus is.

In Matthew 12:43–45, Allen warned about the danger of spiritual emptiness. When an unclean spirit leaves a person but finds the “house” empty, it returns with greater force. He stressed the necessity of being filled with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:18), explaining that a cleansed life must also be a surrendered and occupied life. Drawing from passages like 1 Corinthians 6:19, Ephesians 1:13, and 1 John 4:4, he reminded the church that believers are the temple of the Holy Spirit and that He who is in us is greater than he who is in the world.

Allen also connected Old Testament imagery, such as the cleansing laws in Leviticus 14 and the fall of Dagon in 1 Samuel 5:1–7, to illustrate how God purifies and claims His dwelling place. He showed how Jesus cleansed the temple (John 2:13–16; Matthew 21:12–13) yet was ultimately rejected, leading to its judgment (Matthew 24:1–2). The warning was clear: what is cleansed but never filled will eventually be destroyed.

Finally, in Matthew 12:46–50, Allen concluded by emphasizing that true belonging in God’s family is not based on physical relationship but on obedience and faith. As Jesus declared, those who do the will of the Father are His true family, and as John 6:28–29 teaches, doing His will begins with believing in Him. The message called listeners to recognize Christ’s authority, receive His cleansing, and be filled with His Spirit.

This message was shared at Calvary Chapel West Jacksonville, a church under the leadership of Pastor Allen Victor.
