Escaping Babylon (Revelation 18)
Pastor Allen opened with a light-hearted remark about money, illustrating that while a dollar can serve well if managed rightly, it can also become a heavy burden when mismanaged. He introduced the focus of the sermon: Revelation chapter 18, which deals with ‘commercial Babylon,’ contrasting it with ‘spiritual Babylon’ discussed in the previous chapter. He examined how greed had infiltrated society and why God decided to bring judgment upon it.
Pastor Allen spoke about the historical significance of Babylon, founded by Nimrod, who sought to build a society without God. He emphasized that the system of Babylon represents the lure of money and materialism that many nations succumbed to, leading to spiritual intoxication. He highlighted how every participant in Babylon’s system gained something—pleasure, power, or wealth—while it was built on idolatry and a false reliance on money, which Pastor Allen cleverly termed ‘dollatry.’
Pastor Allen reminded the congregation of God’s call to come out of Babylon, referencing the phrase from Luke about remembering Lot’s wife. He illustrated how Lot’s wife looked back at Sodom, revealing her heart was still attached to its materialism. He encouraged listeners to evaluate their own attachments and how they might hinder their obedience to God’s calling. He explained that separating from this worldly system does not mean leaving the country but rather becoming financially free and debt-free to better serve God.
Pastor Allen shared practical steps for obtaining financial freedom, including creating a budget, establishing an emergency fund, paying off debt using the snowball method, saving for the future, giving generously, investing wisely, and living below one’s means. He recounted his personal experience of paying off debt with his wife, emphasizing the importance of being free from the burdens that debt carries, as it can influence one’s ability to follow Christ fully.
Concluding the sermon, Pastor Allen encouraged the church to seek help if they struggled with debt. He reiterated that the church serves as a place of healing and support for those in need, emphasizing the importance of community and counsel. He closed with a heartfelt reminder that true treasure is found in Christ, urging everyone to find contentment and to live a life focused on glorifying God, which leads to true freedom from the system of Babylon.
