Hard Times Reveals True Friends (2 Samuel 17)

Preacher:
Passage: 2 Samuel 17
Service Type:

Pastor Allen opened the sermon by discussing the rarity of true friendship. He shared that during tough times, one discovers who their true friends are. Drawing from the life of David in 2 Samuel 17, he emphasized how real friends prove their loyalty when challenges arise. In this chapter, David faced betrayal and plots against his life, notably from Ahithophel, a former advisor who had turned against him. Pastor Allen highlighted the significance of having true friends who stick by you when the fire rages.

The speaker narrated the plot devised by Ahithophel to kill David, showcasing how bitterness can lead one to betrayal. He explained that Ahithophel’s actions stemmed from unresolved anger, particularly tied to past events involving David and Bathsheba. Pastor Allen pointed out the quickness with which people can turn against you, paralleling Absalom’s actions against David to the betrayal Jesus experienced. He encouraged the congregation to recognize that true friends are those who remain steadfast, even amid trials.

Pastor Allen then introduced Hushai, another trusted friend of David. Hushai skillfully countered Ahithophel’s advice, subtly buying time for David. Through this story, the pastor underscored the dangers of pride and ego. He stated that when leaders allow their ego to influence their decisions, they risk poor outcomes. The message conveyed was clear: maintaining humility and relying on God’s wisdom is essential, especially in leadership.

The sermon transitioned to a more uplifting note as Pastor Allen highlighted the acts of kindness shown to David by his loyal supporters, Shobi, Makir, and Barzillai. These men provided food and comfort during David’s time of need. Pastor Allen related this back to Proverbs 11:25, expressing that those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed. He challenged the congregation to consider how they can be true friends and supporters to others, encouraging them to show generosity and care, especially in difficult times.

In conclusion, Pastor Allen posed two reflective questions for the congregation: Who can you trust? and Who can trust you? He reminded everyone that true friendship is demonstrated when we are there for others without expecting anything in return. He urged church members to be proactive in their relationships and to support one another, emphasizing that church is about community, not just attendance. With an encouraging call to action, he invited everyone to reach out and be the friend they wish to have.
