Jesus: The Vine and the Branches (John 15:1-17)

Preacher:
Passage: John 15:1-17
Service Type:

Lionel Staplefoote began by reading from John 15:1–17, drawing our attention to Jesus’ words about the vine and the branches. He spoke personally and with quiet conviction about his own journey of faith, sharing how profoundly his father’s salvation shaped his life. That experience, he noted, led him into a community of believers committed to serving God faithfully and together.

He then invited the congregation to consider the setting of those words—Jesus gathered with His disciples at the final supper. Lionel emphasized the seriousness and tenderness of that moment, reminding us that Jesus was preparing His followers for what lay ahead. By declaring Himself the true vine, Christ reshaped their understanding of life with God, making it clear that spiritual strength and fruitfulness flow only from abiding in Him. Within that connection, believers are called to uphold and encourage one another in their shared calling.

Turning to the image of pruning, Lionel explained how the Father lovingly works in the lives of His people, removing what hinders growth so that greater fruit may be borne. He spoke candidly about seasons in his own life when unhealthy habits had to be surrendered in order to walk more closely in God’s purpose. He urged the congregation not to resist this refining work, but to receive it as a necessary part of spiritual growth and maturity.

As the message continued, Lionel addressed the power of prayer and the importance of remaining rooted in Christ’s words. He explained that when believers truly abide in Jesus, prayer becomes deeper and more aligned with God’s heart. He encouraged regular time in Scripture, allowing God’s Word to shape both our prayers and our relationship with Him.
