Thanksgiving: To Whom? For What? (Psalm 105:1-5)

Preacher:
Passage: Psalms 105:1-5
Service Type:

As we approach the season of giving, filled with travel plans, Thanksgiving feasts, and invitations, it’s essential to reflect on the true essence of gratitude. Thanksgiving is not just about turkey and pumpkin pie; it’s a time to express our gratitude, both for who God is and for all He has done.

(Luke 17:11-19) shares a powerful story of ten lepers, but only one returned to express gratitude. Many, like the nine lepers, fail to return thanks due to pride, self-sufficiency, discontentment, envy, or being too busy. The goal of this study is to encourage us to pause and give thanks genuinely.

The Psalmist, in Psalms 95:1-7, calls us to give thanks for who God is – the great God, the King above all gods, the Creator, and our Savior. The Psalmist provides a comprehensive list of God’s names, titles, and attributes, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging God as our provider, healer, and shepherd.

Five Reasons to Give Thanks: The Psalmist urges us to recognize God’s supremacy (vs 3), His control over everything (vs 4), His ownership of all (4b), and our identity as His people (vs 7). Worship becomes a natural expression of gratitude, calling us to bow down, kneel, and acknowledge God’s greatness.

The Psalmist, in Psalms 105:1-5, also prompts us to give thanks for what God has done. We are encouraged to call upon His name, make known His deeds, sing, talk, glory, rejoice, seek, and remember. Gratitude is a multifaceted response, involving both heart and action.

The Benefits of Giving Thanks (Psalm 103:1-5): Psalm 103 lists the benefits of thanking God, including forgiveness, healing, redemption, loving kindness, and satisfaction. This passage assures us that as we express gratitude, we are strengthened with the renewal of our youth, much like an eagle.

We learn from Matthew Henry’s experience that there’s always something to be thankful for, even in challenging circumstances. As we practice giving thanks, it’s crucial to reflect on personal gratitude. What are we most thankful for? Salvation, family, health, and countless blessings. Gratitude is a powerful practice that shapes our attitudes, relationships, and overall well-being.

As we delve into this season of giving thanks, let us remember to express gratitude for who God is and what He has done. Let our worship be a genuine reflection of the gratitude that overflows from our hearts.
