The Afterglow: Prophecy – Speaking what was Spoken

Passage: 1 Corinthians 12:7-11
Service Type:

In our journey through 1 Corinthians 12:7-11, we explore the manifestation of the Spirit, given to each one for the profit of all. Among the spiritual gifts, we find prophecy, which plays a pivotal role in God's divine plan. Prophecy, as defined, encompasses both foretelling and forth telling predicting the future based on direct revelation from God and declaring truth and guidance rooted in His word for the present generation. This gift allows us to "speak what has been spoken," echoing the ministry of Jesus as seen in Luke 4:16-21, where He quoted Isaiah 61:1.

However, in our modern world, we must be cautious of false prophets and prophecies that have infiltrated even the seeker-friendly church. Some pastors avoid the topic of prophecy due to its complexity and controversy, but it's essential to heed Jesus' warning in Matthew 24:24 about false prophets and their deceptive signs and wonders. To identify false prophets, we can look for five telltale signs: speaking presumptuously, prophesying for profit, telling people what they want to hear, bringing fear instead of hope, and claiming prophetic exclusivity.

Prophecy is a gift available to all believers, yet not everyone holds the office of a prophet. The primary purpose of prophecy is to edify, exhort, and comfort believers, creating anticipation, encouraging activity, and providing comfort. It can enhance the atmosphere of worship, offering spiritual direction and insight, addressing specific issues, and even calling for correction and repentance when needed.

To practice prophecy, we need to pray for the baptism of the Holy Spirit, revelation, and boldness. We should also follow guidelines, as mentioned in 1 Corinthians 14:29-32, allowing two or three prophets to speak and others to judge. This ensures order and accountability within the church.

As we delve into the profound topic of prophecy, let us remember that Calvary Chapel West Jacksonville, under the leadership of Pastor Allen Victor, seeks to provide spiritual guidance and support. Join us in exploring the depths of God's word and embracing the spiritual gifts He has bestowed upon us.
