The Entitled Generation (1 Kings 21)

Preacher:
Passage: 1 Kings 21
Service Type:

Pastor Allen Victor presented a message from 1 Kings 21 titled “The Entitled Generation.” He examined the account of King Ahab, Naboth, and Jezebel to illustrate how entitlement can lead a person from discontentment to disappointment, disrespect, distortion, disobedience, destruction, and ultimately divine judgment. Ahab wanted Naboth’s vineyard because it was conveniently located next to his palace, but Naboth refused because the land was the inheritance of his fathers. Rather than accepting “no,” Ahab became sullen, while Jezebel encouraged him to use his authority to obtain what he wanted. She arranged for Naboth to be falsely accused and executed, after which Ahab took possession of the vineyard.

Pastor Allen emphasized that Ahab’s actions demonstrated the destructive nature of entitlement. His desire for something that did not belong to him resulted in the death of an innocent man, suffering for Naboth’s family, and the involvement of others in wickedness. Elijah confronted Ahab with God’s judgment, reminding him that sin cannot remain hidden and that there are consequences for choosing temporary pleasure over obedience to God. Pastor Allen challenged the congregation to ask, “Is it worth it?” before giving in to temptation, recognizing that one sinful decision can result in imprisonment, broken families and relationships, addiction, a ruined reputation, loss of employment, or the loss of peace with God.

The message also addressed entitlement in modern society, including attitudes in the home, workplace, church, and government. Pastor Allen explained that entitlement causes people to believe they deserve privileges, possessions, opportunities, or treatment regardless of whether they have earned them or whether those things belong to someone else. He warned that entitlement can cause people to become focused on what they believe they deserve rather than being grateful for what they have or concerned about the needs of others.
Pastor Allen concluded by emphasizing that entitlement can be overcome through an attitude of gratitude, a willingness to work for what is desired, and a willingness to give rather than always expecting to receive. He pointed to 1 Thessalonians 5:18, Philippians 4:11, 2 Thessalonians 3:10, Acts 20:35, Ephesians 4:28, and Philippians 2:4 as biblical principles for cultivating thankfulness, contentment, personal responsibility, generosity, and concern for others. The message ultimately encouraged believers to recognize entitlement in their own lives and choose gratitude, contentment, service, and obedience to God instead.

Calvary Chapel West Jacksonville, under the leadership of Pastor Allen Victor, presented this message as an encouragement to examine the heart and resist the attitudes that lead to entitlement.
