The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (Revelation 6)
In a powerful sermon presented by Pastor Allen Victor, the congregation at Calvary Chapel West Jacksonville was led through Revelation chapter 6, where the breaking of the seals on the scroll unleashed a prophetic vision of judgment upon the earth. Pastor Allen reminded listeners that Revelation 1 introduced Jesus Christ revealed to John, chapters 2–3 addressed the state of the Church, and chapters 4–5 transported John to heaven, where he witnessed the throne of God, the worship of angels and the 24 elders, and the Lamb who alone was worthy to open the sealed scroll.
As Pastor Allen began the message on Revelation 6:1, he explained the invitation from one of the four living creatures, who thundered, “Come and see.” What followed was a harrowing unveiling of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.
The first seal revealed a white horse (Revelation 6:2). Some interpret the rider as Jesus, but Pastor Allen clarified it represents the Anti-Christ, not Christ. The rider carried a bow without arrows, symbolizing peace, and was given a crown. He conquered the world not by force but by deception. Pastor Allen emphasized how today’s world—marked by global instability, inflation, pandemics, AI threats, and political chaos—is ripe for a figure who promises solutions. The Anti-Christ, meaning both “against” and “instead of” Christ, will appear as a savior but is in fact a deceiver. Citing Matthew 10:34, Pastor Allen noted that Jesus came not to bring peace but a sword.
The second seal opened to reveal a fiery red horse (Revelation 6:3–4), representing war and bloodshed. Though the first rider offered peace, it was only a tool to seize power. The red horse removed peace from the earth, unleashing civil unrest and global violence. Pastor Allen referenced 1 Thessalonians 5:3, warning that cries of “peace and safety” would precede sudden destruction.
The third seal brought forth a black horse (Revelation 6:5–6) with a rider holding scales, symbolizing famine and economic collapse. Pastor Allen drew parallels to the Great Depression and recent events like the COVID-19 pandemic, explaining how inflation and scarcity could result in food becoming unaffordable. While the poor suffer, the elite—those who control the “oil and wine”—will continue in luxury. This points to a deepening division between the ruling class and what Pastor Allen called the “useless class.”
The fourth seal unveiled a pale horse, whose rider was named Death, with Hades following close behind (Revelation 6:7–8). Power was given to them to kill a fourth of humanity with war, famine, disease, and wild beasts. Pastor Allen highlighted modern concerns about overpopulation and technological displacement, quoting Noah Harari of the World Economic Forum, who controversially suggested drugs and virtual reality might pacify the masses. Instead, the pale rider’s solution is extermination—an effort to decrease demand rather than increase supply.
The fifth seal revealed the souls of the martyrs under the altar (Revelation 6:9–11). Pastor Allen explained these were tribulation saints, not the Church, which had already been raptured (as seen in chapters 4–5). These believers came to faith after the rapture and were martyred for their testimony. They cried out for justice, and God told them to wait a little longer until the number of martyrs was complete. Pastor Allen referenced Daniel 9:27, explaining that this period would last seven years. He urged listeners not to delay accepting Christ, warning that missing the rapture would mean enduring the full force of God’s judgment.
The sixth seal unleashed cosmic disturbances (Revelation 6:12–14). A great earthquake shook the earth; the sun darkened, the moon turned to blood, and stars fell from the sky. Pastor Allen explained this could be caused by a massive meteor, nuclear detonation, or another apocalyptic event. These signs echo the warnings found in the prophetic books of Isaiah, Joel, Zephaniah, and others.
Finally, Revelation 6:15–17 described how people—from kings to slaves—will hide in fear, crying out for the mountains to fall on them and hide them from the wrath of the Lamb. Pastor Allen emphasized the tragic irony: they feared the face of the Savior more than His wrath. The sermon concluded with the question: “Who is able to stand?” The answer remains unchanged: only those who have been washed in the blood of the Lamb.
This sobering message reminded all in attendance of the urgency of repentance and the blessed hope we have in Christ.
