The Afterglow: Speaking Forth Edification
Pastor Allen welcomed everyone and emphasized the importance of creating space for the Holy Spirit to move in their lives. He reflected on the balance between the Word and the Spirit, quoting the saying that too much of one without the other can either puff one up or lead to chaos. He shared that the aim of their gathering was to grow mature spiritually by allowing the Holy Spirit to minister among them.
In 1 Corinthians 14, Pastor Allen pointed out that the pursuit of love was paramount, highlighting it as the greatest gift surpassing spiritual gifts like prophecy and tongues. He explained that prophecy serves to edify the church, providing comfort and stirring one another up to grow in faith. The pastor addressed the necessity of understanding and utilizing spiritual gifts, noting that there are many in the church who may be unaware of their spiritual abilities, while others may possess gifts but not use them effectively. The goal was to enhance the church’s community through understanding and application of spiritual gifts.
As Pastor Allen shared the story of Saul’s conversion from Acts 9, he illustrated the transformative power of encountering Jesus. Saul was blinded and struggling with fear and confusion after persecuting Christians. He remained in prayer, seeking direction. Ananias, guided by the Lord, obeyed and went to Saul, demonstrating action in faith. This meeting led to Saul being filled with the Holy Spirit and subsequently becoming a powerful instrument for Christ, highlighting that obedience can lead to pivotal moments in another’s spiritual journey.
The sermon emphasized Barnabas’s role in encouraging Saul, especially when the rest of the disciples feared him. Pastor Allen emphasized how Barnabas stood up for Saul and brought him into the fellowship, showcasing the importance of encouraging one another in faith, particularly towards new believers. He also recounted Barnabas’s efforts to uplift John Mark, illustrating that everyone deserves a second chance and how encouragement can lead to significant ministry impacts.
Pastor Allen concluded with a call for collective prayer, asking the Holy Spirit to lead as they sought to edify one another. He reiterated the examples of encouragement and strength from Scripture, encouraging the congregation to actively partake in building each other up through gifts and fellowship. The focus remained on fostering a community where love and support thrived, deeply reflective of Christ’s teachings.
