Godliness with Contentment (1 Kings 10)

Preacher:
Passage: 1 Kings 10
Service Type:

Pastor Allen Victor taught through 1 Kings 10 in a message titled “Godliness with Contentment,” focusing on how the Queen of Sheba came to test Solomon after hearing reports of his wisdom and the fame of the Lord. Pastor Allen explained that she arrived with hard questions, but Solomon answered every one of them, leaving her amazed by his wisdom, prosperity, servants, and worship of God. Through 1 Kings 10:1-9, the message showed that Solomon became living proof that God was real and active in a person’s life. The teaching emphasized that people today still come with difficult questions about whether God is real, whether He changes lives, heals people, restores marriages, and still performs miracles. Pastor Allen reminded the church that believers often become the testimony that others read before they ever open a Bible.

The sermon also highlighted Psalm 34:8, encouraging believers to let others “taste and see” the goodness of the Lord through kindness, forgiveness, endurance, and transformed lives. Pastor Allen spoke about authenticity, explaining that even unbelievers often respect Christians who genuinely live out their faith. He shared how hypocrisy pushes people away from God, while a sincere walk with Christ points people toward Him.

As the chapter continued through 1 Kings 10:10-29, the message examined Solomon’s incredible wealth, gold shields, luxurious throne, merchant ships, horses, and expanding riches. Pastor Allen explained that wealth itself was not evil, since many biblical figures such as Abraham, David, and Job were wealthy. However, he warned that Solomon gradually began placing confidence in riches, military strength, and accumulation rather than fully trusting in the Lord. Using Deuteronomy 17:14-20 and Psalm 20:7, the sermon clarified that God’s warning was not against possessions themselves, but against allowing money, power, or status to replace dependence upon God.

The teaching also addressed modern financial struggles, pride, overspending, and the pressure people feel to impress others through houses, vehicles, clothing, or lifestyles they cannot truly afford. Pastor Allen challenged believers to ask two important questions: “Why am I accumulating more?” and “How much is enough?” The message concluded with 1 Timothy 6:6, reminding the church that “godliness with contentment is great gain,” and encouraging Christians to pursue a life that honors God more than wealth or appearance.

This message was shared at Calvary Chapel West Jacksonville under the leadership of Pastor Allen Victor.
