Breakthrough: When God Goes Before You (2 Samuel 4-5)

Preacher:
Passage: 2 Samuel 4-5
Service Type:

Pastor Allen opened the sermon by exploring the aftermath of Abner’s assassination in 2 Samuel chapter 4. He shared how Saul’s son, Ishbosheth, was affected by the loss, illustrating the turmoil in Israel following Abner’s death. He pointed out that though Abner served as a general for the king, his actions aimed at maintaining control rather than serving faithfully, which led to his demise.

The sermon highlighted the treachery of Ishbosheth’s captains, Baanah and Rechab, who assassinated him while he rested. They believed this act would win them favor with David, not realizing David’s principles around dealing with God’s anointed. Pastor Allen emphasized that David saw through their deceit and instead ordered their execution. This provided a powerful lesson in integrity and the importance of not compromising one’s values for personal gain.

In chapter 5, all the tribes of Israel came to David, acknowledging him as the leader they had long respected. David’s humility and faithfulness during his years of service led to his anointing as king over Israel. Pastor Allen reminded the congregation of the importance of being faithful in small things, as God rewards faithfulness with greater responsibilities, citing David’s growth from a shepherd to a king.

Pastor Allen then delved into the significance of overcoming personal strongholds, drawing parallels between David’s battles against the Jebusites and the spiritual battles faced today. He urged the congregation to identify those areas of their lives where they felt trapped by sin and to seek God’s guidance for victory. Through prayer, faith, and obedience to God’s word, Pastor Allen assured that breakthroughs were possible if approached with the right heart.

Towards the conclusion, the message emphasized the necessity of seeking God’s will before taking action. David’s example of inquiring of God before each battle displayed the importance of guidance in all decisions. Pastor Allen encouraged the church to wait on God patiently for direction, underscoring that true success and victory come from trusting in the Lord and His timing. The call was made for everyone to renew their minds and hearts to seek after God’s purposes above their own ambitions.
