Thyatira: Holding on to Jesus, Not Jezebel (Revelation 2:18-29)

Preacher:
Passage: Revelation 2:18-29
Service Type:

Pastor Allen opened the message with a warm prayer, expressing gratitude for the community gathered together in faith. He emphasized the importance of growth, whether through classes or worship in the sanctuary, encouraging everyone to seek a deeper understanding of God through His word.

He shared an illustration about a woman preparing a Thanksgiving ham, where a family tradition led to unnecessary waste without understanding its origin. This led to a reflection on how church traditions can sometimes overshadow the true teachings of Christ. Pastor Allen highlighted that the church in Thyatira faced a similar issue with traditions that could distract from the core message of Jesus.

Pastor Allen described the commendation given to the church in Thyatira as found in Revelation 2:19, where Jesus recognized their works, love, service, faith, and patience. Despite their many good qualities, including a strong commitment to service, he noted that this church, like Martha, seemed to prioritize works over the relationship with Jesus. He reminded the congregation that love should be the foundation of all actions, as the greatest commandment is to love God and others.

The message shifted as he addressed the condemnation given to the church for allowing a woman described as Jezebel to lead them into false teachings and immoral practices, referencing Revelation 2:20. Pastor Allen clarified that this was not necessarily a literal woman but symbolic of corrupt influence within the church. He stressed the importance of sound doctrine and the need for repentance, warning that sin leads to consequences and that God is patient but will eventually bring judgment if the church does not turn back to Him.

In his exhortation, Pastor Allen encouraged the members of Thyatira, and by extension the congregation, to hold fast to Jesus and His word. He emphasized that amidst trials and distractions, they were to keep their focus on Christ and not be swayed by traditions or false teachings. This call to perseverance reminded everyone that Jesus is sufficient and that they should not seek to add anything to their faith.

Lastly, Pastor Allen spoke about the restoration and hope promised to those who overcome, citing Revelation 2:26-29. He explained that those who remain faithful would rule with Christ in the future kingdom. He brought the message to a close with an invitation for everyone to recognize the power and life-changing impact of God’s word, encouraging all to return to Him, no matter how far they felt they had drifted.

This sermon was presented by Pastor Allen Victor at Calvary Chapel West Jacksonville.
