Bruised but Not Broken (Matthew 12:1-21)

Preacher:
Passage: Matthew 12:1-21
Service Type:

In the message titled Bruised but Not Broken from Matthew 12:1–21, Pastor Allen Victor taught that while everyone has been wounded—physically, emotionally, or mentally—Jesus refused to leave people broken. Pastor Allen began by explaining how the disciples were accused of breaking the Sabbath (Matthew 12:1–2), highlighting how the Pharisees elevated man-made traditions above God’s intent. He walked through the meaning of the Sabbath using Exodus 20:10–11, Genesis 2:2–3, Deuteronomy 5:12–15, Leviticus 23:3, and Mark 2:27, showing that it was designed as a day of rest, blessing, worship, and joy—not burden. He emphasized that legalism focused on the letter of the law while missing its spirit, reminding the church through 1 John 5:3 that God’s commandments were not burdensome.

Continuing in Matthew 12:3–8, Pastor Allen showed how Jesus defended His disciples by pointing back to Scripture, explaining that preserving life, serving God, and obeying the Lord of the Sabbath took priority over rigid rule-keeping. Through practical illustrations, he revealed how legalism drained joy and distorted God’s heart. Moving to Matthew 12:9–14, he described how the Pharisees, instead of helping hurting people, sought to criticize and condemn them. In contrast, Jesus demonstrated that doing good was always right, even on the Sabbath (Matthew 12:11–12), proving that people mattered more than rules.

Pastor Allen then pointed to Matthew 12:15–21 as evidence of Jesus as the Messiah, fulfilling prophecy and revealing His compassionate nature. He focused on the powerful truth that “a bruised reed He will not break, and smoking flax He will not quench,” illustrating how Jesus gently restored the broken and rekindled fading faith. Using examples such as the woman caught in adultery (John 8:3–11), the Samaritan woman (John 4:1–30), Zacchaeus (Luke 19:1–10), and others, he showed that Jesus met people in their brokenness with mercy and restoration. He also addressed real-life wounds—abuse, failure, addiction, depression, and rejection—reminding listeners through Psalm 3:3 that God lifted their heads.

Finally, Pastor Allen encouraged those whose faith felt like a flickering flame, pointing to examples like the father in Mark 9:14–29, the thief on the cross (Luke 23:39–43), and Peter’s restoration (John 21:15–19), assuring them that Jesus would not extinguish their faith but reignite it. He concluded with a call to cry out to God, trusting Him to heal, restore, and strengthen, anchored in the promise of 2 Corinthians 4:8–9 that though believers were struck down, they were not destroyed.

This message was shared at Calvary Chapel West Jacksonville, a church under the leadership of Pastor Allen Victor.
