God Equips the Called (Matthew 14)
Victor Laird taught through Matthew 14, showing how God equips those He calls, even when the task seems impossible or the circumstances appear overwhelming. The message began by examining how people throughout history who challenged powerful systems often faced intense opposition, drawing a parallel to the events at the beginning of Matthew 14 and the life of John the Baptist.
The study explored Matthew 14:1-12 and highlighted John the Baptist as an example of someone whom God called and equipped from the womb. Drawing from Matthew 3:1-8 and Matthew 3:7, Brother Victor showed how John boldly proclaimed God’s truth without fear, even when confronting powerful leaders such as Herod. The message emphasized that conviction over sin can either lead a person to repentance or attempts to silence the truth, as illustrated by Herod’s response to John. Matthew 5:34-37, 1 Corinthians 15:33, and Hebrews 10:24 were also examined, demonstrating the importance of integrity, godly influences, and surrounding ourselves with people who encourage faithfulness to God.
Moving into Matthew 14:13-21, the study focused on Jesus’ response to the death of John the Baptist. Victor pointed out the humanity of Christ as He withdrew to a solitary place yet still demonstrated compassion toward the crowds. References such as Matthew 4:1-11, Luke 6:12-16, Matthew 26:36-46, Philippians 2:3, and Jeremiah 29:13 revealed Jesus’ consistent pattern of seeking the Father through prayer and placing the needs of others before Himself. The feeding of the five thousand demonstrated that when God calls His people to a task, He also provides what is necessary to accomplish it. Jesus instructed the disciples to feed the multitude, and through five loaves and two fish, God multiplied what was offered. The twelve baskets that remained served as a personal reminder to each disciple that God had worked powerfully through their obedience. The message stressed that prayer remains the believer’s greatest source of strength, guidance, and dependence upon the Lord.
The sermon then examined Matthew 14:22-33 and Peter’s experience walking on the water. Victor explained that storms often arise even while believers are following God’s direction. Jesus addressed fear before calling Peter to faith, reminding listeners of 2 Timothy 1:7 and 1 John 4:18. Peter began to sink when fear replaced faith, yet Jesus immediately reached out when Peter cried for help. Matthew 17:20 was used to illustrate that even little faith can grow when placed in the hands of a great God. The congregation was encouraged to resist the distractions and doubts that Satan brings and instead keep their eyes fixed on Jesus during life’s storms.
Finally, Matthew 14:34-36 and Malachi 4:2 demonstrated that Jesus is the promised Messiah who brings healing and restoration. The message concluded by reminding everyone that God’s call extends to every person. Those who have not yet trusted Jesus Christ were invited to receive Him as Savior, while believers were encouraged to embrace a life of faith and close fellowship with Christ. Just as the disciples witnessed extraordinary works because they walked closely with Jesus, Christians today are called to experience God’s power and purpose by following Him wholeheartedly.
