Struck with Blessings (2 Samuel 6)

Preacher:
Passage: 2 Samuel 6
Service Type:

In 2 Samuel chapter 6, Pastor Allen introduced the theme of the sermon by exploring a common question: why do good things happen to those who do wrong while the righteous face difficulties? He illustrated this by sharing personal anecdotes, including the struggles of his beloved mother and the unexpected benefits that seemingly wicked individuals experience. These thoughts set the stage for understanding the unfolding events in this chapter, where King David aims to bring the ark of God into Jerusalem.

Pastor Allen detailed David’s determination to bring the ark of God to Jerusalem, citing that he gathered 30,000 of Israel’s choice men for the mission. The ark, representing God’s presence, power, and promise, had been neglected after its capture by the Philistines. As they transported the ark on a new cart, a jubilant parade erupted, filled with joyous music and celebrations. But amidst the festivities, tragedy struck when Uzzah reached out to steady the ark as it stumbled, resulting in his immediate death.

Pastor Allen highlighted the gravity of Uzzah’s error, emphasizing that he was not among those appointed by God to handle the ark, despite his good intentions. David’s subsequent anger towards God reflected a misunderstanding of divine instructions. Pastor Allen reminded the congregation that God’s prescribed order is vital in ministry and life, illustrating that obedience to God’s commands is paramount to avoid severe consequences. Uzzah’s death served as a stark warning about the importance of reverence and respect toward God.

After the alarming incident, David took the ark to the house of Obed-Edom, where it remained for three months and blessed Obed-Edom’s household abundantly. Pastor Allen noted that Obed-Edom belonged to the family of Korah, the line designated to carry the ark. The blessings that followed showed the rewards of adhering to God’s design and approach. Pastor Allen encouraged everyone to reflect on how following God’s will and His directives leads to genuine blessings in life.

As David learned from the experience, he returned with reverence to retrieve the ark, ensuring it was carried by the priests. This time, the approach was filled with fear of the Lord. It demonstrated the importance of worshiping God wholeheartedly, without pretense or self-importance. The pastor encouraged the congregation to pour their emotions and sincerity into their worship, drawing parallels to David’s ecstatic dancing and celebrating, and how true humility transforms our relationship with God.

Pastor Allen concluded with the story of Michal, David’s wife, who reprimanded him for his unkingly behavior during the celebrations. David’s response affirmed that true worship transcends status and pride. The sermon delivered a poignant reminder to honor God without losing sight of humility in service. The negative fruit of a critical spirit was illustrated in Michal’s barrenness, reinforcing that a heart aligned with divine purpose and community reflects spiritual fruitfulness. Ultimately, it reflected on how all began with tragedy, yet through faithfulness and adherence to God’s ways, blessings ultimately emerged.
