The Day the Giant Killer Fell (2 Samuel 11)

Preacher:
Passage: 2 Samuel 11
Service Type:

Pastor Allen began by reflecting on the life of King David, highlighting how he rose to fame as a young boy after defeating Goliath. Yet, David’s fame was not solely tied to his victories; he also became well-known for his significant failures. This message focused on one particular story in 2 Samuel 11, exploring the mistakes David made following his success as king. The theme was aptly titled ‘The Day the Giant Killer Fell.’

The sermon detailed how David, during a time when kings were supposed to lead their armies into battle, chose to remain in Jerusalem, seeking comfort rather than fulfilling his kingly duties. David’s idle time became a dangerous opportunity for temptation. Pastor Allen warned against the idea that we can sit idle without consequences, as David’s inaction led to a series of poor decisions.

Pastor Allen further described the moment David saw Bathsheba bathing and his subsequent actions. He emphasized that while seeing temptation is not sin, allowing oneself to act upon it is. Pastor Allen reminded the congregation of Jesus’ teachings on lust and how important it is to take our thoughts captive. He advised that avoiding sin is far easier than dealing with its consequences, and underscored the importance of fleeing from temptation.

David’s misguided attempts to cover his sin were a focal point in this section. Pastor Allen explained how David tried to deceive Uriah into believing the child was his, thus delving deeper into sin rather than confessing. He pointed out how this pattern of sin leads to further deceit and complications. The pastor quoted Proverbs, ‘He who covers his sin will not prosper,’ emphasizing that confession is necessary for mercy.

As the message wound down, Pastor Allen reminded the congregation that God sees all our actions, whether in public or private. He highlighted David’s ultimate realization and impending consequences for his sins. However, he shifted the focus toward hope, emphasizing that despite our failures, God is faithful to forgive through genuine repentance. He encouraged everyone to turn back to God, as His grace and mercy are always available to those who sincerely seek it.
